High Technologies – Key for Development

On November 5, Rijeka City Hall hosted, for the ninth time in a row, a Day of New Technologies – DaNTe 2014. The gathering was organized by the City of Rijeka – Information Technology Institute and the association MIPRO. The gathering addressed latest technologies, and one of the speakers was MSc Gordana Kovačević, Ericsson Nikola Tesla President, who spoke about innovations in the Networked Society.

DaNTe aims to interest businessmen, experts, scientists, students and citizens to apply new high technologies in economy, education, Public Administration and Local Government,  as well as to share experiences on successful application of new technologies in Rijeka, Croatia and in the wider region. This gathering promotes the comprehensive application of digital technologies, as a key element that enables social and economic development.
 
As Rijeka Deputy Major, Marko Filipović, stated at the gathering opening, Rijeka has a long tradition of applying new technologies in its business and in the overall city functioning:  "Following the principles of the European Charter for the Safeguarding of Human Rights in the Cities, both we and the European Union highlight the projects that aim at open, available and efficient city administration, and truly serve all citizens“. He listed some examples of using new technologies, as recently introduced city card or free wireless Internet access. 
 
The city of Rijeka Head of IT Department Željko Jurić, highlighted that organizing DaNTe was a step closer to a “Smart City“: "A Smart City is globally relevant concept of upgrading the quality of life in cities, based, among other, on application of modern ICT. The Information Technology Institute also operates in this segment, trying to add its contribution Smart Administration development, collaborating with the scientific and private sector on realizing innovative projects. We organize Dante, because we believe that it spreads awareness on the necessity of applying innovative solutions with the aim to benefit the society as a whole." He further continued by presenting three European projects in which Rijeka participates, and which are related to using new technologies.

A lecture regarding innovations in the Networked Society, held by Ericsson Nikola Tesla President, MSc Gordana Kovačević, received a great interest. In its presentation, she highlighted Ericsson Nikola Tesla concrete contribution to the Networked Society, which is perceived not as a final destination, but as a challenging journey: “Ericsson, and thus Ericsson Nikola Tesla, being a part of Ericsson Corporation that is the global leader in the communications segment, believes in the Networked Society, which positively impacts peoples’ lives, business and society. Today, Ericsson Nikola Tesla has more than 1750 highly educated experts, who use their knowledge, expertise and innovativeness in a global environment to create new value. The Networked Society gives a chance to all industries and individuals to show their full creative potential, and to give their contribution to positive ICT impact on people, business, environment and society as a whole.“
 
The gathering addressed many interesting and current topics; novelties in applying ICT in the State and Local administration, applying ICT in the University of Rijeka and economy, and one could also find out where in Croatia top 3D printers are produced and the impact that the development of 3D technology has on modern life. The lectures regarding interactive visualization technology and the development of optical access networks were also held, and there was also discussion on the innovation path, from an idea to realization.
